6 Tips for Building Your Personal Brand – a Summit Sneak Peek!
When Tyra Banks hosted the All Stars season of “America’s Next Top Model” – the year that they declared a winner, then disqualified her after digging up some dirt and re-shot an uncomfortable new ending with a different winner – she gave each of the contestants a key word to describe themselves, a word that would be the heart of shaping their own personal brand.
When they missed the mark – “lovable” Laura was booted off when she began photographing too sexy – they paid the price by losing out on the opportunity to take home the top prize.
While you are likely not building your brand in front of the bright lights and cameras of reality TV, it’s important to establish a clear, positive voice declaring who you are and what you stand for. Whether you’re job hunting, opening a new business, or hoping to lure new customers to a website you have to have a clear voice and message.
Your personal brand is essentially who you are and what you are known for. It is a clear representation of your image, values, and message. When you are building and expanding your personal brand you have to be your own PR person, putting yourself out there in many different forums and putting the most effective spin on how people see you.
I have been working hard to build my brand ever since I transformed my life by becoming a Beachbody coach, and this year I will be sharing some tips on how I did it in a workshop at the 2016 Beach Body Coach Summit in Nashville, Tennessee which is coming up at the end of July.
In addition to keynote speakers and training sessions, the three-day Summit will include product launches, a chance to purchase top-of-the-line workout gear, HUGE group workouts led by some of Beachbody’s top celebrity trainers, and of course the option to immerse yourself in the amazing and positive Beachbody Culture and hang out with your teammates. Simply put, it will be three days spent focusing on making you the best you and best Coach that you can be.

And while you have to see me in person to learn ALL the tips and hints I plan to offer at Summit, here’s a sneak peek at some of the most effective ways you can build your personal brand.

6 Tips for Building Your Personal Brand

1. Be unapologetically you at all times. Authenticity is the key to relating to people and to finding YOUR PEOPLE – the ones who get who you are because you reach them with a voice they not only understand, but also like. These are the people who see a lot of themselves in who you are or who they want to be in who you are. If you’re not being true to yourself and are putting out a false image, people will be able to tell. Honesty and integrity are an essential part of successful branding.
2. Be consistent with your content. Whatever social media platforms you choose to use, you MUST be consistent and focus on developing your audience. Treat building up your brand and selling yourself like a full time job and it will pay off in the long run. It takes time to develop your brand and gain traction, so be sure to be consistent, NO MATTER WHAT! Consistency will keep people who respond positively to your message coming back, and it will help cultivate positive relationships which is exactly what you want.
3. Think about what you want to accomplish with your brand. Where are you going and what do you want to embody to the people looking at your brand? If you are not who you want to be yet – if you still are reaching for your goals – don’t let that stop you. Taking on the characteristics of the person you are striving to be will serve as personal inspiration, making it more likely that you’ll achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.
4. Concentrate on visual storytelling. Photographs capture as much attention as words, so it’s important that the visuals are not only great – my workout photos are always set in beautiful locations as a subtle reminder that with good health comes an adventurous life – but also emphasize your brand. Look at how other people and brands you respect do this and learn from them. They do not have to be in the same industry or doing the same things. You can learn from anyone who is doing something you are inspired by. If you are not a great photographer, take the time to develop your skills. Watch tutorials on Youtube, check out famous photographers and ads, look at the work of respected photographers (Annie Leibovitz, or classic nature photographer Ansel Adams) to get some tips that will help you create the right images to sell yourself.
5. Stay on brand. The girls who failed to win the top spot on “America’s Next Top Model: All Stars” lost because they didn’t stay true to who they were. Once you understand your brand, embody it across the board. In order for your message to be understood, all of your content needs to focus on branding. It’s important not to muddy the waters with anything that deviates from your message, because you’ll only confuse the people you’re trying to reach.
6. Be flexible and always evolve. While staying on brand is vital, inertia is never a good thing. No one stays the same for their entire life and neither should your brand. As your life grows – through learning new skills and cultivating new interests – incorporate those new things into your brand to add depth and layers that will increase interest in you and your brand!
